TUDCN

JPEG The Trade Union Development Cooperation Network (TUDCN) is an ITUC network composed of its affiliated trade union organisations, their solidarity support organisations (SSO) and representatives of the ITUC regional organisations.
The network’s aim is to boost the importance of trade unions in international development and improve the coordination of trade union development cooperation activities.

How does the Network operate?
The network is the common platform for dialogue on international development policy and development-related questions.
It exchanges information and best practices and promotes common approaches on monitoring and evaluation, programming and programme-coordination.

Democratic ownership: the TUDCN core concept
ITUC development cooperation strategy is based on the principle of “democratic ownership”. The TUDCN firmly believes that people should own and direct their development policies.

The TUDCN works through four groups or ‘workstreams’:
The Trade Unions As Actors for Development group looks into the trade unions’ specific contribution to sustainable development.
The Trade Unions Development Cooperation Effectiveness group discusses how trade unions should implement their own development cooperation.
The International Development Policies and Aid Architecture group tackles the trade union contribution to the debates on global development cooperation, its institutional framework and the interaction between aid and development.
The Development Education group studies the way trade union affiliates inform and educate their members on the challenges of international solidarity and international policy developments.

TUDCN is working with all its partners, particularly the European Union which supported the creation and the implementation phase of the Network in 2009-2010, to identify strategies and resources so that the Network can continue to function on a permanent and sustainable basis.
