Luc Triangle, ITUC Acting General Secretary
We have a busy month ahead of us at the ITUC, and a key moment will be the World Day for Decent Work, 7 October. We will use the day to highlight wages, one of the six workers’ demands for the New Social Contract. We will mark the day with the call: “It’s time for a Pay Rise”.
With the UN General Assembly underway until 26 September, we will be putting the case there for the New Social Contract, which is central to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our advocacy there will also highlight the ITUC’s unwavering commitment to peace and common security, and the UN’s role as the peak multilateral body. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, on 26 September, will provide an occasion to again project our call for a world free of nuclear weapons.
On 18 September, International Equal Pay Day, we will be launching a new report “Trade Union Action to Promote Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value”, which we trust will be useful in support of campaigning for pay equity.
We will be present at the annual meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Marrakech, Morocco, to keep up the pressure for reform of international financial institutions, to ensure they work in the interests of people instead of continuing with regressive and damaging policies. On we will be holding a special development assistance forum on social protection, jobs and just transition alongside the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC).
An extraordinary ITUC World Congress will be held by video, 12 October. The Congress will be asked to ratify two additions to the ITUC Constitution that will enhance our election procedures, as well as electing the new ITUC General Secretary. In that regard, I would like to place on record my appreciation to all the affiliates that nominated me for the position. Our Congress Credentials Committee and the General Council meeting on 7 September confirmed that no other nominations had been received, and I look forward to putting my candidacy forward at the Congress.
In solidarity,
Luc Triangle
ITUC Acting General Secretary
