ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle said: “For more than five decades , the Assad family subjected the Syrian people to brutal repression, denying workers their fundamental rights. We are closely monitoring developments in the country as the fall of this oppressive regime marks a critical opportunity to transition from decades of oppression to a future based on justice and democracy.
“This must be led by the Syrian people through a democratic political process that aligns with the principles outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
“Syrian workers, who were long denied their fundamental rights to vote, democratically elect representatives and advocate for their economic and social interests, now have the chance to reclaim their role in shaping the future of their nation.
"The ITUC stands ready to support them in their pursuit of jobs, rights, sustainable development, peace, and democracy." Luc Triangle
The transition in Syria must:
- Consolidate peace in Syria and promote unity among its people.
- Build a free, democratic, and independent trade union movement capable of defending workers’ rights and freedoms.
- Advance the implementation of fundamental international labour conventions.
- Take into account ILO Recommendation 205 on the measures to generate employment and decent work for the purposes of prevention, recovery, peace, and resilience.
“All those responsible for violating the human and trade union rights of the Syrian people must face accountability in accordance with international law.
“This process must prioritise reconciliation and the rule of law, rejecting revenge or retribution, and focus instead on comprehensive development within sovereign and democratic Syrian institutions that preserve the country’s territorial integrity.
“The global union movement calls on governments and businesses to support Syria’s democratic reforms and respect its sovereignty. By empowering workers and fostering inclusive governance, Syria can embark on a path to stability and prosperity. The ITUC stands ready to assist the Syrian people in peacebuilding, reconstruction, and the establishment of democratic institutions,” concluded Luc Triangle.
